Coasts Flashcards
Describe Swash
Is always at an oblique angle to the beach
Why do waves break
Waves start out at sea and have a circular orbit.
As the wave approaches the shore, friction slows the base of the wave.
This causes the orbit to become elliptical until the top of the wave breaks over.
The water swashes up the beach
Define backwash
Is always at a right angle to the beech, takes material away
Describe the properties of a constructive wave
Stronger swash Break infrequently Deposits sediment Long compared to height Found on gently sloping beaches
Describe the features of a destructive wave
Stronger backwash Removes sediment Break frequently High compared to length Steep sloping beaches
Soil creep
Pulls water down the hill, moving soil particles with it. It happens very slowly and slopes appear rippled (known as terracetts)
Slumping
Aka rotational slipping. When it rains after drought the rock becomes saturated, weakening the rock and the gravity causes it to slip down a slope on a slip plane.
Sub areal processes
Include mass movement and weathering Mud flows Rock falls Salt crystals (oxidation) Vegetation Freeze thaw action Soil creep Slumping
