Coasts Flashcards
Keyword- Weathering
The breakdown of rocks by Sun, frost, rainwater and plants
Keyword – erosion
The wearing away of rocks
Keyword – mechanical weathering
This is usually caused by changes in temperatures
Keyword – Biological weathering
is caused by the actions of plants and rocks
Keyword – hydraulic action
When waves crash against cliffs they force air into cracks in the rocks air is trapped. Pressure builds up. As waves move back, pressure is released. The trapped air expands. Small explosions take place. These explosions cause the rocks to break into smaller pieces.
Keyword – abrasion
The wave flings sand, pebbles, and lost rocks against the rock. These wear it away like sandpaper.
What are waves and how are they formed?
The fetch is the distance the wave can travel and interrupted.
The steps of a coastline being formed – step one
The water fills up the cracks in the rock, then freezes.
The steps of a coastline being formed – step two
As water turns into ice it expands, so it forces the crack to widen
The steps of a coastline being formed – step three
The ice melts and the rock splits overtime
Explain what corrosion looks like:
Corrosion often appears as rust, tarnish, or deterioration on metal surfaces over time.
Explain what abrasion looks like
Abrasion is when surfaces are worn down or scratched through friction or rubbing against each other, often resulting in a smoother appearance or loss of material.
Explain what attrition looks like:
Attrition refers to the gradual reduction or wearing away of something, often through repeated friction, pressure, or erosion over time.
Explain what hydrolacation looks like
Hydrolacation refers to the erosion caused by the force of water, often resulting in the formation of channels or valleys.
What are wave cut notches and platform
When Cliff faces get raided, they end up forming a wave cut notch with an overhand and rock that has not been eroded. Eventually this overhang becomes too heavy for the rays support, and it falls into the secret and a wave cut platform
