Coasts Flashcards
Define headlands
Area of resistant rock which protrude from the coastline
Define bays
Area of less resistant rock between 2 headlands that erode quickly
Define longshore drift
The transport of sediment along a stretch of coastline caused by waves approaching the beach at an angle
Define concordant
Where bands of different rock types run parallel to the coastline
Define discordant
Layers of rock run at right angles to the coast
Define weathering
The breakdown if rocks at the earths surface by the action of rainwater, extremes of temperature and biological activity
Define mass movement
Downslope movements of rock, soil or mud under the influence of gravity
Physical weathering
- Water in cracks expands during freezing which breaks the rock
- Sand blown at rocks wear it down
- Rain wear rocks down
- The constant waves wear the rocks down
Biological weathering
Roots from plants find ways into cracks forcing it to widen and weaken, pieces fall off
Constructive wave features
- Build beacges
- Weak
- Low backwash
- Strong swash
- Built in calm weather
Destructive wave features
- Break beaches
- Strong
- Strong backwash
- Weak swash
- Built in storms
