Coasts Flashcards
1
Q
How is a spit formed?
A
Sediment is carried by longshore drift
When there’s a change in the shape of the coastline, deposition occurs and a long thin ridge of material is deposited.
A hooked end can form if there’s a change in wind direction
The water behind the spit is very sheltered because waves can’t get there so silts are deposited there to form salt marshes or mud flats
2
Q
How are bars formed?
A
A spit can grow across a bay and joins two headlands together.
They can trap shallow lakes behind a bar which are called lagoons which may end up being filled with sediment
