Coasts Flashcards
How do waves form?
By wind blowing over the sea
What happens when waves reach the coast?
There is a little horizontal movement of water
What are two different types of waves?
Constructive and Destructive
What are the different types of weathering?
Chemical, biological, and mechanical
What is mass movement?
It is the downward movement of weathered material and rock under the influence of gravity
What is coastal erosion?
Erosion means the wearing away the landscape
What are the processes of coastal erosion?
Solution, abrasion, attrition, and hydraulic action
How is sediment deposited?
It occurs in 4 different ways such as solution, suspension, traction and saltation
What is longshore drift?
The movement of sediment depends on the direction waves approach the coast
What is the formation of cave stacks and arches?
First you have a crack and then a cave is formed and then it turns into an ark them the ark is enlarged by erosion and this leaves a stack the stack is then eroded and collapse it turns into a stump
What is hard engineering?
Hard engineering uses artificial structures to control natural processes
What is soft engineering?
Soft engineering involves methods that work with natural processes
What is managed retreat?
Managed retreat is controlled retreat of the coast
What is a drainage basin?
A drainage basin is the area of land drained by area and it tributaries
What are the processes of erosion?
Vertical which is downwards lateral which is sideways
