Coastline Of Submergence Flashcards
What (3)
Rias
Fjords
Dalmatian coats
What are rias (4+)
Flooded river mouths/ valleys
Sea level rise relative to the land River valleys flood and appear as coastal inlets
Mouth of river exe + Poole harbour = natural harbours
Steep coastline
What is a fjords (2)
Like rias as are flooded valleys
However they are flooded glacial rather than river valleys
Fjords look like and how (3)
When glacier erode they create steep sided u shaped valleys
Very steep almost vertical sides
Glaciers can over deepen the valley = shallower at mouth than inland
Exmaple of fjords (2)
Sognefjord in Norway
200km long from sea o head of fjord
Dalmatian coats where do they occur (2+)
River systems which once ran parallel to the coast (due to concordant geology)
They are flooded = series of long islands
Would once have been the hills along the valley sides parallel to the coastline
Key difference between rias + fjords to DC (2)
R and F run perpendicular to the coastline
Dalmatian coast islands and peninsulas run parallel to it
