Coastal Systems and Landscapes Flashcards
What is a high energy coastline?
Receive high inputs of energy in the form of large, powerful waves, caused by strong winds, long fetch and steep shelving offshore zones.
Factors of a high energy coastline
High rate of erosion
Sandy Coves and rocky cliffs
E.G. Cave, Arch, Stack
What is a sediment cell?
A stretch of coastline, typically bordered by two headlands, where the movement of sediment is self-contained to some extent.
What type of system is a sediment cell?
Closed System
Coastal Processes and sediment Cells
Coastal management can disrupt a sediment cell.
UK and Sediment Cells
11 major cells in the UK
How are Spits formed?
LSD deposits material across the river mouth leaving a bank of sand and shingle sticking out into the sea.
How are recurved ends formed?
Changes in wind and wave direction may curve the end of a spit.
Compound spits
New growth will occur and over time several recurved ends may form.
And a compound spit forms
The area behind the spit is sheltered by waves that develop into mudflats and saltmarshes.
