Coastal Processes Flashcards
Erosion: What is solution?
The dissolving of soluble chemicals in rocks
Erosion: what is hydraulic action?
Waves force air into cracks in the cliff eventually causing the rock to break apart
Erosion: What is Attrition?
Rock fragments carried by the sea knock against each other causing them to become smaller and more rounded.
Erosion: What is abrasion?
This is the ‘sandpapering’ effect of pebbles grinding over a rocky platform often causing it to becone smooth.
Trans: What is solution?
Dissolved chemicals are moved along by waves.
Trans - saltation?
(Sauter - to jump in French)
A ‘hopping’ or ‘bouncing’ motion, of particles too heavy to be suspended along the sea bed
Trans - Suspension?
Small particles of sand are suspended and moved within the water.
Trans- Traction
Tractor
Large particles rollrd alon the sea bed
