Coastal processes Flashcards
Abrasion
Process of erosion caused by rocks and material banging against the cliff face
Hydraulic action
Power of the waves force air into the cracks in the rock, causing a small explosion which erodes the rock away
Solution/Corrasion
Chemicals, particularly acids in the water wear away the rock
Attrition
Already eroded rocks bang against each other and cause each other to become smaller and more rounded.
Long shore drift
Transportation process whereby the prevailing wind moves beach sediment along the beach over time.
The sediment goes up the beach at the angle of the wind and comes back down at right angles to the sea.
Traction
Transportation of the material by rolling it along the beach of seabed.
Saltation
The sediment gets bounced along as it is light enough to be momentarily picked up.
Suspension
Fine sediment can be picked up by the ocean and transported through the process of suspension
Solution
The water can absorb chemical from the rocks and carry them away as part of a solution with the sea water.
Friction
This force, when applied by the wind causes waves to form which get larger the longer the fetch it.
