Sea walls
Solid walls built along the coastline separating land from sea
Can withstand waves and protect people and property from flooding
Coast 10million per km. Sea walls are large structures that some consider ugly
Groynes
Wooden or rock barriers built at right angles to the coastline at intervals of approximately 50metres. They are built to interrupt the longshore drift and encourage deposition
Cause the beach to build up making it act as a natural defence against erosion and as tourist attraction
need to be replaced around 20 years and require maintenance
They deprive area down the coast and can cause flooding further down.
They are unnatractive
Gabions
Metal cages filled with boulders stacked together at base of cliff to reduce wave impact
