Coastal Landscapes and Processes Key Words Flashcards
Memorise the key words for the coastal landscapes and processes topic
Abrasion
Fragments of rock, pebbles and sand are picked up by waves and thrown against the cliff face, breaking off pieces of rock
Arch
A rocky opening through a headland (erosional landform)
Attrition
Rock fragments carried by the sea knock against one another, causing them to become smaller and smoother
Backwash
Backwards movement of water down the beach once the wave has broken
Bar
A ridge of sand or shingle across the entrance to a bay or river mouth (depositional landform)
Bay
A broad coastal inlet often with a beach (erosional landform, caused by varying rates of erosion among rock types)
Beach
A deposit of sand or shingle at the coast (depostional landform)
Bedding Plane
Horizontal line of weakness in sedimentary rocks showing how the rock was laid down in layers
Berm
A ridge of sediment found towards the back of a beach
Cave
An area that has been hollowed out by waves at the bottom if a cliff (erosional landform)
Cliff
Steep rock outcrop along a coast
Coastal Management
Attempts by humans to alter or maintain the natural features of a coastline
Coastal Recession
The gradual movement backwards of the coastline which is the dividing line between the land and sea
Coastal Squeeze
Coastal habitats which are being reduced in size due to sea level rise
Compensatory Habitats
New habitats created to make up for habitats lost through coastal squeeze
