7
Q

how does the wind affect a spit?

A

occasional changes to dominant wind leaves to spit having recurved ends
over time several recurved ends may be abandoned as waves return to their original direction

sea level rises meaning material moves towards the coast

these remain partly submerged

15
Q

how are barrier islands formed?

A

formed after the last ice age
ice melt caused rapid sea level rise. Rising water flooded land behind beaches and transported sand offshore where it was deposited in shallow water forming island

16
Q

other theory for barrier islands

A

originally bars attached to coasts

eroded in sections causing breaches to bars

17
Q

what forms behind barrier island

A

lagoon or marsh

18
Q

how are sand dunes formed?

A

formed when sand deposited by longshore drift is moved up the beach by wind
sand trapped by driftwood or berms is colonised by plants and grasses
vegetation stabilises the sand and encourages more sand to accumulate there forming embryo dunes.
