Coastal landforms part 2 :) Flashcards
Name 2 different types of coastline
Emergent coastlines
Submergent coastlines
The names ‘emergent’ and ‘submergent’ coastlines are based on the features of the area.
give some submergent coastline features
Rias
Fjords
Outline emergent coastlines
Where the land has been raised in relation to coastline.
cause formation of raised beaches and relic cliffs
Created through ‘isostatic rebound’ - rise of land masses that were depressed by large ice sheets in last ice age.
Outline the formation of a raised beach/marine platform
Areas of former wave cut platforms and their beaches have risen higher than present sea level due to isostatic rebound
Outline isostatic rebound
AKA continental rebound, post-glacial rebound and isostatic adjustment.
rise of land masses that were depressed by large ice sheets in last ice age.
Give an example of an emergent coast
Fife, Scotland.
What are relic cliffs?
Relic cliffs - cliffs found at back of raised beach.
What landforms do submergent coastlines create?
Rias, fjords and Dalmatian coasts.
How are Rias formed? Example?
Rising sea levels flood river valleys.
Deeper at mouth of inlet. Shallower as branch off inland.
Kingsbridge estuary in south Devon.
How are Fjords formed?
Example?
Rising sea levels flood deep glacial valleys - create natural inlets and harbours.
Lysefjord in Norway.
When do Dalmatian coasts occur?
Example?
When valleys running parallel to coast become flooded due to sea level change. Leaves narrow, long and rugged islands.
Formed due to concordant coastlines (rock layers parallel to coast?)
