What are headlands and bays?
Headlands are bands of more resistant rock that lie between bays of less resistant rock where land has been eroded back by the sea

What is an arch?
Begins as a cave formed in the headland, which is gradually widened and the deepened until it cuts through to crest arch
What a stack?
As isolated pillar of rock left when the top of the arch has collapsed
What is created after a cliff?
Wave cut platform
What conditions are needed for a spit to form?
Change in direction of the coastline, constructive waves, shallow water and a weak current
What does a spit often have on the end?
Hooked end
Why do spits stop growing?
Depth of water increases and current becomes stronger
What is a bar?
A bar is a ridge of sand or shingle which forms across the entrance to a bay or cove linking two headlands
What is a beach?
Beaches are found at the coast and are found between the high and low-tide levels
How and where does beach material accumulate?
In a sheltered bay around an obstacle
For a sand dune to form what conditions need to be present?
Obstacles on the beach, strong winds and lots of sediment moved by saltation
As you move inland across a sand dune what happens to plants?
The number and type of plants increases as it becomes warmer and less windy and soils contain more moisture
What are the names of the first dune and species?
Embryo dune and pioneer species
