Coastal landforms Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the formation of a headland and bay landform
A
The coast consists of alternating types of rock: hard rock (e.g. sandstone) and soft rock (e.g. clay)
When water erodes the coast by processes such as hydraulic action and abrasion, the hard rock is MORE resistant to erosion but the soft rock is easily eroded.
This creates a discordant coast with the hard rock as headlands and the soft rock as bays where sediment is deposited due to long shore drift
2
Q
Why are there no beaches at the headland part of headland and bay
A
In this part of the coast erosion dominates as there is a high amount of energy in the water, so no deposition occurs, meaning no beaches.
