Coastal deposition landforms Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the formation of a spit

A
  1. A spit occurs at a headland and bay
  2. The prevailing wind direction causes LONGSHORE DRIFT to occur, which carries sediment across the coastline.
  3. This changes the shape of the coastline

4.The DISTAL END (the end) of the spit is exposed to a change in the wind and wave direction, this created a RECURVED END

  1. The area behind the spit is protected from waves, this allows sediment to be deposited and vegetation to grow, a salt marsh is produced here.
