coastal depositions Flashcards

Q

spit

A
  • process
  • form when there is a change in direction on a coastline
  • This allows a sheltered area for deposition
  • Material slowly builds up to appear above the water and the spit develops as long as the supply of deposition is greater than the amount of erosion
  • example is Culbin Sands

Q

tombolo

A
  • process
  • To begin with, a spit will form when there is a change in direction on a coastline
  • The spit extends out from the mainland, connecting to an island to form a tombolo

deposition processes

A
  • (depos) are formed by the process of longshore drift which is lateral/zig-zag movement of the waves
  • Swash is where waves push material up the beach at an angle due to the prevailing wind
  • the returning backwash is dragged back down the beach at right angles due to gravity

Q

sandbars*

A
  • processes
  • sandbars form when there is a change in direction on a coastline allowing a sheltered area for deposition material slowly builds up to appear above the water
  • the bar develops as long as the supply of deposits is greater than the amount of erosion
  • if a spit reaches the other side a of a bay then a sandbar is formed
  • An example is Slapton Sands
