Coast keyword definition Flashcards
Coastal squeeze
Loss of natural habitats are deterioration of their quality arising from anthropogenic (Human) actions or structures preventing landward transgression of those habitats.
Earth bund
Circles of stones placed on the ground to hold water in the soil rather than letting it run quickly over the surface.
Ecology
The study of interaction between an organism and its environment
Estuary
Where a river meets the sea. Home to unique plant and animal communities that have adapted to a mix of salt and fresh water.
Marine processes
Those associated with the action of waves. Includes erosion, transportation and deposition.
Percolation
The process of water flowing within a soil, usually downward due to gravity.
Promontory
A raised mass of land that projects into a lowland or body of water.
Berms
Small ridges of beach sediment, found at the position of the mean high tide mark.
Cusps
A pointed and regular arc pattern of sediment on a beach.
Runnels
A narrow channel, in this context in the sand of a beach.
Pressure release
Type of weathering where overlaying rocks are removed by weathering and erosion and underlying rocks expands and fractures parallel to the surface
Salt crystallisation
Type of weathering where salt seeps into pores and rocks, it then precipitates and forms shards causing pressure on the rocks and disintegrating them.
Pounding
Mass of a breaking wave which exerts pressure causing a rock to weaken, due to high energy waves
Deflation
Wind picking up and moving sand particles
Settling velocity
The velocity at which sediment is deposited.
