Who is Joshua James?
Joshua James is considered one of the greatest live savers in Coast Guard history. During the last 13 years of his life, he participated in rescues that saved 540 lives.
Who is Ida Lewis?
Ida Lewis is credited with saving 18 lives during her 39 years at Lime Rock Lighthouse, and was awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal.
Who is Dorothy Stratton?
Dorothy Stratton was the director of the SPARS (Semper Paratus Always Ready Women’s Reserves) during WWII. During her four years, she recruited and led 10,000 enlisted women and 1,000 commissioned officers.

Alexander Hamilton is considered the father of the Coast Guard. Revenue Act was passed and the Revenue Cutter Service is formed.

The Steamboat Inspection Service is formed.
1848
The Life-Saving Service and Bureau of Navigation are formed.
1871
First established life-saving service along Long Island NY, and NJ.
August 18th, 1899
Rasmussen S. Midgett single-handedly rescued 10 people from the grounded ship Priscilla.
January 28th, 1915
Revenue Cutter Service and Life-Saving Service merge to form USCG.
September 26th, 1918
German U-Boat fires a torpedo at Coast Guard Cutter Tampa, killing 111.
1919
Twin sisters Genevieve and Lucille Baker of the Naval Coastal Defense Reserve become the first uniformed women to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard.
May 1919
LT Elmer stone copilots Navy NC-4 for the first transatlantic flight.
September 27th, 1942
Signalman First Class Munro receives the Medal of Honor. He supported USMC and died at Guadalcanal Point Cruz, WWII.
