Give a brief but detailed explanation of how coal is formed.
Millions of years ago, over time, thick layers of plant material were formed over swamps. The rotting plant layers hardened and dried out under the mud forming peat. These layers of peat became buried deeper. Eventually this peat became fossilised into a layer of coal.
Name 6 items that contain some ingredients that come from coal.
Soaps, aspirin, fertilizers, dyes, shampoos and tennis rackets.
Why is coal not a mineral?
Because it is formed from the remains of plants.
