Coaching and Learning Flashcards
Transfer of learning
The influence of past experience on the learning/performance of new skills/experiences
why is transfer of learning important?
understanding transfer of learning will assist with decision making about what to practise and how that will improve performance
3 basic categories of transfer
- skill to skill
- theory of practice
training to competition
skill to skill transfer
when skill developed in one sport affects development of learning another
2 forms of skill to skill transfer
proactive: throwing action in softball is transferred to throwing action in javelin
retroactive: throwing action learned in skill A transferred to skill B and by learning new skill (B) this may affect previous Skill A
theory of practice
transferring knowledge of a sport or skill into actual performance
involves: application of of skills, tactics and strategy can be used in match play
white boards, videoing self etc
training to competition
transfer skill development in training into competition situation
speciality is key
practice should duplicate game situations
practice should be same intensity as games
players exposed to game specific practices
benefits of transfer learning
athlete should be exposed to a wide variety of movement experiences from a variety of sports to be able to:
recognise and select relevant cues from the environment
process information received faster and more accurately
have more responses available to select from
better execute the selected response
positive transfer of learning
- when the learning of one skill is enhanced by the learning of another skill
- when two sports have similarities in basic technique and makes ti easier to learn second skill
soccer kick to afl kick
negative transfer of learning
- occur between two skills that are similar but the first skill learnt has a negative effect making it harder to learn second skill
- negative effects performance of a new skill/sport
squash= soft wrist, tennis= hard wrist
zero/neural transfer of learning
no relationship at all between two sport term of skills or strategies
soccer and golf
movement analysis 2 components
qualitative (knowledge/opinion)
quantitative (numbers)
Quantitative analysis
numbers
this is achieved by using objective measured (based on facts)
Heart rate, world ranking, time received form swimming
qualitative analysis
this is achieved by using subjective measures
observation of the quality of the movement
checklist, reflection diary, watching games and making judgemnets
qualitative motion analysis model POEI)
1, preparation
- observation
- evaluation
- intervention
