Co-transport Flashcards
Where three parts does co-transport occur?
-The ileum (small intestine)
-Epithelial cells
-The blood
What substances use co-transport?
Ammino acids and glucose.
Where are the epithelial cells and what do they have on them?
-Lining the small intestine and have microvilli on the surface pointing towards the lumen.
What is the process of co-transport?
-3 sodium’s are transported out of the cell to the lumen and 2 potassium’s go into the cell from the blood.
-Creates a concentration gradient of Na.
-The sodium is actively transported (needs ATP) from the lumen to the cells.
-Then 2 sodium’s and transported by facilitated diffusion taking 1 glucose with them.
-Creates a concentration gradient for glucose.
-Then glucose can move into the bloodstream by facilitated diffusion.
