Co-ordination in mammals - muscles Flashcards
What are 3 types of muscle?
Cardiac
Smooth
Skeletal
Where is cardiac muscle found?
In the walls of the heart
Where is smooth muscle found?
In the walls of tubular organs, in the iris
Where is skeletal muscle found?
Attached by tendons to bones
What is the appearance of cardiac muscle like?
Striated branched cells
Intercalated discs between cells
What is the appearance of smooth muscle like?
Spindle shaped cells
No striations
Single nucleus
What is the appearance of skeletal muscle like?
Distinct striations
Multinucleate muscle fibres
What is the function of cardiac muscle?
Contract to pump blood around the body
What is the function of smooth muscle?
Movement of materials in body
Peristalsis in the gut to move food through - continues for long periods of time
What is the function of skeletal muscle?
Movement and locomotion
strong contractions but not long lasting
What is the similarity between smooth muscle and cardiac muscle?
Both involuntary
What is meant by involuntary?
Not under our conscious control
