CNS Neoplasms Flashcards
Primary malignant brain tumors
2% of all cancers in US adults
Glioma
Derived from astrocytes, oligodendrocytes or ependymal cells.
Generally a glioblastoma or astrocytoma
Grade IV actrocytoma
AKA glioblastoma Highly malignant Difficult to remove Survival is around 2 years Surgery, radiation, chemo
Oligodendroglioma
Most commonly in frontal or temporal lobes
Can have areas of hemorrhage
Generally slow growing
Surgery, chemo, radiation
Ependymoma
Ventricles of brain and spinal cord
Rare in adults
More common in children
Meningioma
Derived from the meningeal cells that cover the brain and spinal cord.
34% of brain tumors
Most common primary brain tumor
Meningioma epidemiology
More common in women
Often benign
Usually grow inward, putting pressure on brain/cord
Surgery/radiation
Schwannoma
Acoustic neuromas are the most common schwannoma.
Arise from the 8th cranial nerve\Benign and slow growing
Serious issues may arise from pressure
Acoustic neuroma s/s
Unilateral hearing loss Tinnitus DIzziness Dysphagia impairment of EOM
Primary CNS Lymphoma
Typically occurs in immunocompromised pt’s
Derived form B lymphocytes
Most often occurs in cerebral hemispheres
Metastatic Brain Tumors
Most common brain tumor
Most common sites of metastasis?
1: Lungs
2: Renal cell
3: Malignant melanoma
4: Breast
5: Colon
Metastatic tumor tx
Chemo, radiation
Common symptoms for brain tumor?
Chronic, persistent HA Protracted nausea, vomiting Seizures Change in HA pattern Neurological symptoms
Best imaging for tumors.
MRI w/ gadolinium
