CNS Intro Flashcards
(22 cards)
What are the 6 parts of the CNS?
Spinal Cord, Medulla, Pons, Midbrain, Diencephalon, Cerebral Hemisphere
Which parts consist of the brainstem?
Pons, midbrain, medulla
Regulates arousal, awareness, sleep
Brain stem
What does the midbrain do?
Coordination of visual and auditory reflexes; sensory and motor functions
What does medulla oblongata do?
autonomic functions e.g. breathing, blood pressure, heart rate
What does pons do?
Conveys info on movement and position of the body
Receives sensory info from the skin and muscles of the head
Brainstem
Linked to the cerebellum
Pons
Thalamus and hypothalamus is found in which area of the brain?
Diencephalon
Role of hypothalamus
autonomic, visceral, and endocrine function
Role of thalamus
Process sensory info and relays to cerebral cortex - consciousness
Cerebral hemisphere’s 3 deep lying structures
Hippocampus, Amygdala, Basal ganglia
Which part of the brain is involved in memory induction, maintenance and retrieval?
Hippocampus
Which part of the brain degenerates when you have Parkinson’s disease?
Basal ganglia
Role of amygdala
Cognitive functions
How many cells are in the CNS?
171 billion
People used to think there are more nerve cells than glial cells. T or F
False, used to think more glial cells than neurons. Now found them to be equal in numbers overall
Which cell produces myelin?
Schwann cells which are glial cells
The CSF is secreted by
choroid plexus
choroid plexus is a glial cell. T or F
False. It is a neuron
Where can you find choroid plexus?
Lining the lateral ventricles
What is the anatomical basis of BBB?
Tight junctions in the endothelial cell brain capillaries
