Gram - coccobacilli in CSF of a patient with headache, fever, neck stiffness, lethargy. What’s the organism?
Hib
Gram - diplococci in CSF of a patient with headache, fever, neck stiffness, lethargy. What’s the organism?
N. meningitidis
Gram + diplococci in CSF of a patient with headache, fever, neck stiffness, lethargy. What’s the organism?
S. pneumoniae
Protein and glucose in CSF of bacterial meningitis: high, low or normal?
High protein, low glucose
Protein and glucose in viral meningitis: high, low or normal?
High/ normal glucose, low protein
Meningitis in a teenager with a rash- what the organism likely to be?
N. meningitidis
Meningitis in an unvaccinated 3yo- what the organism likely to be?
Hib
Very severe meningitis in a 6yo- what the organism likely to be?
S. pneumoniae
S. pneumponiae on HBA: colony formation
Small white colonies with alpha haemolysis
Hib on HBA: colony formation?
Doesn’t grow, needs cells to be lysed so it can access X and V factors
What is X factor in RBCs needed by Hib to grow?
NAD+
What is V factor in RBCs needed for Hib to grow?
Haem
Hib on CHA: colony formation?
Small white colonies
N. meningitidis: requirements for growth?
Fastidious, needs a rich medium such as serum broth proir to growth on agar
N. meningitidis on HBA: colony formation?
Small, non haemolytic white colonies
N. meningitidis on CHA: colony formation?
Small white colonies
What is Hib capsule made from?
Polysaccharide
What is meningococcal B capsule made from?
Sialic acid (therefore cant make a good vaccine to it)
Meningitis in a neonate. What organisms could it be? (3, with percentages)
GBS (S. agalacticiae)= 40%
E. coli= 40%
Klebsiella= 5%
