CNS Blood Supply Flashcards
Blood supply to CNS comes from:
Vertebral and segmental (radicular) arteries
Vertebral arteries enter skull through
Foramen magnum
Anterior vertebral arteries supply:
Anterior (ventral) horns Lateral horns Anterior and lateral funiculi Pyramids Medial lemniscus
Posterior vertebral arteries supply:
Posterior (dorsal) horns Posterior (dorsal) columns Gracile and cuneate fasciculi Gracile and cuneate nuclei in medulla
Major blood supply to spinal cord between T5 and L3
Artery of Adamkiewicz
Venous Drainage of Spinal Cord
Blood passes from spinal veins to epidural internal venous plexus (of Batson)
Arteries to brain
Vertebral and internal carotid
Anterior cerebral artery supplies:
Supplies medial surface of frontal and parietal lobes (leg and foot areas of motor and sensory cortex-paracentral lobule)
Supplies corpus callosum
Supplies anterior limb of internal capsule via medial striate artery (recurrent artery of Heubner)
Middle cerebral artery supplies
Supplies lateral surface of cerebrum and insula
Supplies trunk, arm and face areas of motor and sensory cortex
Supplies anterior and posterior limbs of internal capsule via lenticulostriate arteries
Pontine arteries supply:
Supply descending motor tracts
Anterior inferior cerebellar artery supplies:
supplies inferior cerebellum, spinothalamic tract, middle and inferior cerebellar peduncles
Superior cerebellar artery supplies
Supplies superior cerebellum, rostral and lateral pons including superior cerebellar peduncle
