CNS and Neurotransmitters Flashcards
What does the nervous system consist of?
The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and a complex network of neurons.
What is the nervous system responsible for?
- This system is responsible for sending, receiving, and interpreting information from all parts of the body.
What two parts can the nervous system be divided into?
- the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system
What are the two main organs of the CNS?
- brain and spinal cord.
What is the function of the striatrium?
- Important role in controlling movements and in motivation
What is the function of the hippocampus?
Short-term memories are passed into long-term memory via the hippocampus
What is the function of the ventricles?
- Produce cerebrospinal fluid to cushion brain and provide nutrients
What is the function of the amygdala?
Emotions and aggression;
- left amygdala may link to a reward system and both positive and negative emotions,
- whereas the right might be concerned with fear and sadness
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
- Regulating eating and drinking and motivated behaviours
What is the function of the media temporal lobe?
- Includes the hippocampus and has a large role in memory
What is the function of the cerebellum?
- Stores memory/ learning of practical skills
What is the function of the corpus callosum?
- The bridge between the two hemispheres of the brain and transmits messages between the two halves
What is the function of the limbic system?
- Concerned with emotions and memories, includes the hypothalamus, hippocampus and amygdala
What does the spinal cord do?
The spinal cord receives information from the skin, joints and muscles of the body. It also carries the nerves that control all movements.
What does the brain do?
The brain is the most complicated part of your nervous system; it receives information directly from the ears, eyes, nose and mouth, as well as from the rest of the body via the spinal cord.
