CNS Flashcards
Order of the reflex arc ?
Stimulus = Pain receptor = Sensory neuron = Spinal cord = Relay neuron = Motor neuron = Effector = Response
What is our body temperature?
37 degrees celcius
What is homeostasis?
The maintenance of the body’s internal environment so it remains as constant as possible
Why do we need to maintain out body temperature at 37 degrees celcius?
It’s the optimum temperature for enzymes in the body to function properly
What are receptor cells?
Detect a change in the environment
What is co-ordination centre?
Receives information from the receptors and sends out signals to coordinate the response of the body
3 examples of co-ordination centres
- The brain
- The spinal cord
- The pancreas
What is the effector?
Bring about a response to the stimulus
What are sensory neurons ?
Detect changes in the enviornment
2 different types of stimuli
Light and temperature
What happens when sensory receptors detect a stimulus?
Produce an electrical impulse that travels along a sensory neuron to the CNS
What is the Central Nervous System made up of?
The brain and spinal cord
Are reflex actions voluntary or involuntary?
Involuntary, they are automatic and rapid responses that don’t involve the conscious part of your brain
What is a synapse?
A small gap between two neurons which the electrical impulse has to cross.
How does a synapse work?
A chemical is released at the end of the first neuron, which diffuses across the synapse to the next neuron - causing a new electrical impulse to be triggered
