CNS Flashcards
General function of CNS
allows for communication between cells
Sensory Imput: info gathered by the body
Motor Imput: reaction to sensory imput
integration: processes and interprets sensory information
Histology (2 main cells)
Neuron –> excitable cels that transmit electrical signals
neuroglia –> support + protect neuron
Histology (neuron processes) 2 types
Tract: bundles of neuron processes in CNS (nerves in the brain and spinal cord)
Nerves: bundles of neuron processes in PNS (nerves in the body)
Unipolar neuron
transmits sensory information from bodys PNS –> to CNS
(touching a hot stove)
Bipolar
primary pathway to transmit visual signals from photoreceptor cells (rods + cons) in retina to ganglia cells
(seeing that you are touching a hot stove)
multipolar
receives info from all its dendrites to integrate into electrical signals
(reaction to the hot stove pulling my hand away)
Neurotube development
3rd and 4th weeks of pregnancy a hollow tube forms from ectoderm of embryo creating the CNS
circle of willis
carotid artery + vetebral artery
Blood brain barrier
Sepperates neurons from some blood born substances like virus and bacteria
selective barrier
allows for fat substances to pass into the brain (alcohol, nicotine, anesthia)
spinal cord
Begains at foreman magnum
ends at L1
provides a 2 way communication path
protected by bone, meninges, CSF
meninges
brain ad spinal cord protection layers
dura matter
arachnoid
pia matter
paraplegic
T1-L1 legs are paralyzed
quadriplegic
C1 down everything below the neck is paralyzed
transection
ctossectioning of spinal cord (pinch from vertebra) at any level causing total motor and sensory loos ( paralyzed)
Parenthesis
sensory loss (dorsal horn)
