CNS Flashcards
What is the cell body?
Main part of cell w. nucleus and mitochondria
What are the dendrites?
Branches at top of neuron that receives messages from other neurons
What is the axon?
Long branch from cell body end of neuron that passes electrical impulses
What is the axon hillock?
Area that connects cell body to axon
What are the Nodes of Ranvier?
Gaps between fatty sheaths that are adjacent
What are terminal buttons?
Very end of neuron where nerve impulse becomes a chemical message
What are vesicles?
Tiny sacs that contain molecules of neurotransmitter chemicals
What is the action potential?
When nerve impulse passes down axon to stimulate release of neurotransmitters
What is the excitatory postsynaptic potential?
Depolarise neuron and reduce its charge
What is inhibitory postsynaptic potential?
Hypolarise neuron and increase its charge
What is the resting membrane potential?
-70mV (slightly negative)
When neuron receives message, EPP happens…? (4)
1) receives more exitatory messages (-55mV)
2) action potential triggered
3) impulse generated and sent down neuron
4) talransferred to nt and travels across synaptic gap
When neuron recieves message, IPP…? (1)
1) receives less inhibitory messages
What do receptors do?
Bind to specific neurotransmitters on postsynaptic gap.
What is reuptake?
When nt not used, destroyed by enzymes OR absorbed again by presynaptic neuron (destroyed with in neuron)
