cndaria Flashcards
What species are in Cnidaria?
Jellyfish, coral and sea anemones
what kind of symmetry do cnidarians have?
radialllllll
What is mesoglea?
the jelly stuff inbetween the living cells layers of organisms
What is cephalisation and do cnidarians have it?
cephalisation is when an organism has a defined head and brain and cnidarians do not have it
what are the specialised cells that cnidarians use for capturing pray?
cnidocytes that contain nematocysts
what kind of gut do cnidarians have?
an incomplete gut with a gastrovacular cavity which serves as the digestive system, where they have only one opening for mouths and anus
what are the two body types of cnidarians?
polyps and medusae
what body types are corals and sea anemones
polyps
why are the characteristics of polyps?
Sendentary,
tubular,
mouth is upwards,
reproduce asexually or sexually
what body types are jellyfish?
medusae
what are the characteristics of medusae
free swimming,
mouth downwards
reproduce sexually
dioecious (male and female individuals)
sensory organs
and eyes kind of(ocelli)
name the classes within cnidaria
Scyphozoa, hydrozoa and anthozoa
What class of cnidaria includes jellyfish?
scyphozoa
medusa
but polyp stage in the life cycle
Describe the class hydrozoa.
mostly polyps,
small jellyfish
often attached to substrate on stalks
some are solitary some are colonial
when they are colonial there are specialised zooids which function as a single organism
what class are the sea anemones and corals?
Anthozoa
polyp 4 lyfe
commonly in symbiosis with algae
What phyla are comb jellies?
ctenophora
