CN V-Trigeminal Nerve Flashcards
Characteristics of CN V- Trigeminal nerve
- Largest cranial nerve
- Composed of three divisions: ophthalmic (V1), maxillary (V2), and mandibular (V3)
- Fibers run from the face to the pons via the superior orbital fissure (V1), the foramen rotundum (V2), and the foramen ovale (V3)
CN V Pathway
Type of Nerve
Mixed nerve (sensory & motor)
V1 & V2 division: General sensation from face, scalp, eye, nasal & oral cavities
V3 division: Motor nerve to several muscles including mastication
V1 Division- Opthalamic Nerve
Provide sensory to:
Skin of forehead
Scalp
Eyelids
Nose
Mucous membranes of paranasal sinuses
Nasal cavity
V2 Division- Maxillary Nerve
Provide sensory to:
Skin of the face over maxilla
Teeth of the upper jaw
Mucous membrane of the nose
The maxillary sinus
Palate
V3 Division- Mandibular Nerve
Provide motor impulses to:
Muscles of mastication
Mylohyoid
Anterior belly of digastric
Tensor tympani
Clinical Application
Trigeminal Neuralgia
Cause pain in upper and lower teeth
Headaches
Pain in the gums and jaw
Pain is unilateral
