CN III Oculomotor Flashcards
The nuclei is located in?
Dorsal medial rostral midbrain tegmentum (level of superior colliculus)
The oculomotor nerves exit anteromedially at the?
Interpeduncular fossa groove
What type of neurons is the Oculomotor?
Voluntary motor
Presynaptic parasympathetic
What muscle does:
Helps raise the eyelid
Works with superior tarsal muscle - a smooth muscle innervated by the SNS
Levator palpebrae superioris muscle
What muscle does:
eye elevation - best abducted
Superior rectus
What muscle does:
eye depression - best when abducted
Inferior rectus
What muscle does:
eye adduction
Medial rectus
What muscle does:
eye elevation when adducted
Inferior oblique
What does the pupillary constrictor/sphincter do?
Constricts in response to light in either eye
What is a pupillary reflex?
Pupil constricts when light is shown into same eye
What is consensual reflex?
Pupil constricts when light is shown into the opposite eye
For an oculomotor injury typical findings are all symptoms to be in the eye?
Ipsilateral to the affected nerve or nucleus
When you have an oculomotor injury you might find it difficult moving your eye in which directions?
Medially, up or down
(Up and down most pronounced when abducted
What is abducted position of eye at rest due to unopposed lateral rectus?
Lateral Strabismus
What is double vision?
Diplopia
