What are the clinical features of a cluster headache?
LOCATION : Unilateral
PAIN : Variable (usually sharp, stabbing), very intense
OTHER SYMPTOMS : Red and/or watery eye, swollen/drooping eyelid, constricted pupil, runny nose, sweating (facially), patient is restless/agitated
DURATION : 15 mins - 180 mins
What are the risk factors for cluster headaches?
Male, FHx, Smoking, Alcohol
What is the first line treatment for an ongoing cluster headache?
WITHOUT any cardiovascular disease or uncontrolled hypertension = 100% oxygen + S.C Triptan
WITH a cardiovascular disease or uncontrolled hypertension = 100% oxygen + intranasal Lidocaine
What are the prophylactic treatments available against cluster headaches?
Avoiding triggers, verapamil, sodium valproate
