Clouds Flashcards
What tiny droplets are clouds made of?
Condensation nuclei
What are clouds referred to as when formed near the ground
Fog
What are the categories of clouds
Low middle, high and clouds with vertical development
Altitude of low clouds
Surface to 6500 feet
Altitude of fog
If less than 20 feet, then ground fog, but otherwise within 50 feet
What is radiation fog?
Fog, which forms over fairly flat surfaces on clear, calm humid nights
What is advection fog?
When a low layer of warm moist air moves over a cooler surface
What is steam fog?
When cold dry air moves over warmer water
Altitude of middle clouds
6500 to 20,000 feet
What are middle clouds made of?
Water ice crystals and may contain moderate turbulence and potential severe icing
Altitude of high clouds
About 20,000 feet
What are high clouds made of?
Mainly ice crystals and rarely pose, icing or turbulence hazard
What are low clouds made of?
Mostly water, but sometimes super cool water, creating icing hazard
Where are bases of clouds with vertical development found?
Altitudes associated with low to middle clouds and their tops extend into high clouds
