Atmosphere & Winds Flashcards
What is the height of troposphere?
36,000 feet
What atmosphere can be found above the troposphere?
Stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere
What is convection?
-Cooler tends to sink and replace warm air. This circulation process is known as convection
What are lines connecting points of equal pressure called
Isobars
What is ridge
Area of high pressure
What is trough & Col
Trough is region of low pressured Col is region of neutral between trough & ridge
How are winds formed?
Winds are formed by a mixture of pressure gradient, and Coriolis force, Corliss force defects winds towards the right in the northern hemisphere
What is sea breeze?
In the day, the warm air over the land starts rising up, so the cool air over the sea starts to flow towards the land, thus causing sea breeze
What is Valley breeze and how fast is it?
. During the day, the top of mountains are heated because of the sun and the warm air rises up and the cool air from the valley starts to replace it the creating a breeze from the valley towards the mountains top they can be between 5 to 20 knots
What are mountain breeze, and how fast are they?
At night, the higher peaks cool off easily , thus it starts to replace the warmer air over the valleys, thus forming a down flow called mountain breeze, they can be 5 to 15 kn
What are katabatic winds?
Any down slope, winds that are stronger than mountain base are called katabatic
What are cold down, slope winds?
When large ice and snow fields accumulate on top of mountains because they are so heavy, they are forced down the mountain and thus develop into down slope winds
What is atmospheric stability?
It is the atmosphere is resistance to vertical motion
What is lapse rate?
The rate at which temperature decreases within increase in altitude is referred to as lapse
What is dry at adiabatic lapse rate?
3° per 1000 feet
