Clostridia Flashcards
Gram staining? Shape? Spores? Oxygen?
Gram Positive Rods, Spore Forming, Obligate Anaerobes
C. tetani exotoxin
TetanoSPASmin
Cleaves SNARE proteins, blocks release of inhibitory NTs like GABA and Glycine
C. tetani symptoms
SPAStic paralysis, trismus (lockjaw)
C. tetani treatment
Prevent with tetanus vaccine
Treat w/ antitoxin, diazepam (for spasms), and wound debridement
C. botulinum exotoxin
Heat-labile toxin
Inhibits ACh release at NMJ
C. botulinum causes
Adults ingest preformed toxin
Babies ingest spores (honey)
C. botulinum symptoms
4 Dās: Diplopia, Dysarthria, Dysphagia, Dyspnea
Flaccid paralysis
C. botulinum toxin uses
Tx focal dystonia, achalasia, muscle spasm, wrinkles
C. perfingens exotoxin
Alpha toxin - a PHOSPHOLIPASE that causes myonecrosis and hemolysis
C. perfingens causes
Undercooked food
C. perfingens symptoms
Gangrene
C. difficile exotoxin
Toxin A: enterotoxin, binds gut brush border, alters fluid secretion
Toxin B: cytotoxin, disrupts cytoskeleton via actin depolymerization
C. difficile symptoms
Diarrhea ā> Pseudomembranous Colitis
C. difficile causes
Secondary to Abx: Clindamycin, Ampicillin
Assoc. w/ PPI use
C. difficile treatment
Metronidazole, Vancomycin
