What does CIWS stand for?
Close-In Weapon System
What is the primary mission?
Anti-air warfare and defense against Anti-surface missiles (ASM)
What is its secondary mission?
Anti-surface warfare and defense against low-slow fliers
How does the CIWS chose its targets?
it choses its target that would hit the ship first or track target by low-sidelobe antenna.
In AAW mode, How does the CIWS detect which target would hit the ship first?
Weapon Control Group and by the low-sidelobe antenna
what needs to happen for the CIWS to fire?
WCG Recommend Fire Hold back tool removed Firing key inserted and closed Hold fire disabled Round under the last round Switch PRE-ARM/ARM
Where are the system parameters monitored?
Locally in CIWS room # 1 and #2
Remotely on Remote Control console (RSC) in (CIC)
What are some of the parameters and operating limits of the CIWS?
Effective Range: AAW mode 2,000 yards or first hit range
Rate of fire: AAW 4500rpm
Hot Gun Condition: 3000 rounds 5 minutes
Rate of fire: 4500rpm AAW
3000rpm Surface
Effective ranges: 2000 yards AAW
4000 yards Surface
What are the two safety precautions of the CIWS?
Clearing Sector Holdback Tool
Fire Integrity Switch
What is the Clearing Sector Holdback Tool?
Mechanical safety against inadvertent firing which forces breech bolts into clearing path so it wont fire.
What is the Fire Integrity Switch?
Electrical safety against inadvertent firing when removed no voltage sent to firing contact so it wont fire
BUT if live ammo inserted it can inadvertently be fired.
