Cloning Plants & Animals Flashcards
In flowering plants parts of the root, leaf or stem can grow into new plants - what is this called
vegetative reproduction
In vegetative reproduction the new plants are genetically identical. What are genetically identical organisms called
clones
Why would gardeners or farmers have use of vegetative reproduction
Increase in stocks of a preferred plant type with characteristics such as flower colour or disease resistance
what is it called to take a part off a plant to grow it into a new plant
to take a CUTTING
What is tissue culture
cutting a small piece of tissue from the parent to grow in a sterile liquid or gel.
What are embryo transplants
embryos are created in a lab but result in a natural birth
In embryo transplants what is the mother called
the donor
In embryo transplants when the egg has been fertilized what is done to create more than one offspring
The embryo is split into it’s individual cells
In embryo transplants the split cells are put where to develop
The womb of a HOST MOTHER
When the youngsters develop from embryo transplants are they identical or different
identical - they are all clones
Why would cloning be useful in animal conservation
- More babies can be born of animals that face extinction
2. Embryos can be frozen for long periods of time to ensure continuation of a species
Why could it be beneficial to clone ourselves?
If we need replacement body parts as we grow old or sick we could take them from our clone. They would not be rejected as they are genetically identical.
Why is it illegal to clone humans
Cloning can cause medical issues for the clone and therefore it would be cruel to create animal who goes on to suffer unecessarily
What was the first mammal to be cloned
Dolly the sheep
