Cloning Flashcards
How can you produce new plants and how easy is it?
It’s fairly easy to artificially produce new plants by taking a cutting, waiting for the cutting to develop new roots and leaves.
What are two advantages of cloning?
All the new plants are genetically identical - they will all have the desired characteristics. Organisms that are difficult or slow to breed normally can be reproduced quickly. Some plant varieties don’t produce seeds, others have seeds that are dormant for long periods of time.
What are two disadvantage to cloning?
If a clone is susceptible to disease or changes in environment, then all the clones will be susceptible. It will lead to less variation, and less opportunity to create new varieties in the future.
Is it easier to clone plants or animals?
Cloning plants is easier. Cloning expensive food crops has been carried out for many years, and causes the public fewer ethical and moral concerns than animal cloning.
What ethical issues does cloning animals raise?
Animal cloning raises ethical issues about how far humans should be able to interfere in the production of new life.
Is human cloning a thing?
No. Regulations currently restrict scientific research into human cloning.
Is cloning a natural or artificial process?
Cloning occurs naturally in some plants and in human identical twins, and it is now possible to clone animals artificially.
What are clones?
Clones are genetically identical individuals.
Are identical twins clones?
Identical twins are clones: any differences between them are due to environmental factors.
How many parents are required for asexual reproduction?
Requires one parent. Since there is only one parent, there is no fusion of gametes, and no mixing of genetic information making the offspring genetically identical to their parents.
Does asexual reproduction take place in animals?
Asexual reproduction in animals is less common than sexual reproduction but it does happen in sea anemones and starfish.
What are two types of stem cells?
Adult stem cell
Embryonic stem cells
