What is meant by impulse control disorder.
an irresistible urge to carry out a behaviour resulting in difficulties in self regulation. The behaviour relives the tension and gives a feeling of intense extreme happiness
( euphoria) which is short lived.
What are the three types of impulse control disorders
- kleptomania
- pyromania
*gambling disorder
Describe kleptomania
recurrent failure to control the urges to steal leading to multiple act of stealing without an apparent motive. ( 0.6 prevalence rate with a female predominance)
List the features of kleptomania patients
*urge to compulsive stealing without being able to control it
*the item which have been stolen is not for personal use or for money / monitory value.
*do not get help or others involvement / do the stealing by them self
*unplanned
*stealing is not done to express anger or vengeance and not related to any hallucinations, delusions.
*stolen items are not used / donated/ returned secretly
*after the action patients feel guilty, shame and embarrassed.
* this acts might be triggered due to negative mood such as feeling lonely , depressed , boredom .
Describe pyromania
recurrent failure to control the urge to set fire leading to multiple acts of fire setting without an apparent motive. these people are fascinated with fire , fire related equipment and activity.
What are the features of pyromania
*recurrent failure to control strong impulse to set fire
*fascinated by fire , attached to fire or fire accelerants
*tension , affection arousal and high anxiety will be present before the action
*fire are not set due to monetary gain , based on criminal intention or vengeance
*they feel extreme guilty after there action
Describe gambling disorder
pattern of persistent or recurrent gambling behaviour which can be online or offline .the gambling behaviour and other features are normally evident over a period of at least 12 months in order for diagnose to be assigned
What are the commonly seen features in gambling disorder
*need to gamble with increase amount of money to achieve satisfaction
*restlessness or irritability when trying to reduce gambling
*repeat unsuccessful efforts to control or cut down gambling
*frequent thoughts of gambling
*gambling when feeling distressed
*lying to conceal gambling activity
*relying on others to help with money problems caused by gambling.
