Q

What do CSEP CPT do?

A
  • Administer the CSEP-PATH to healthy populations.
  • Develops and implements a tailored physical activity, fitness and lifestyle plan.
  • Minimum academic req: 2 yr college or university degree/diploma
19
Q

What is a CSEP CEP sanctioned by CSEP to do?

A
  • Conduct pre-participation screening, administers various health & fitness assessments prescribes & supervises exercise programs, and provides counselling and healthy lifestyle education to general populations, high performance athletes, and those with chronic health conditions, functional limitations or disabilities across the lifespan.
  • Accept referrals from health care professionals.
  • Use evidence-informed behaviour change models to facilitate physical activity and exercise participation, and lifestyle modification.
  • Use outcome from health and fitness assessments to design physical activity and exercise prescriptions
  • Monitor the influence of medications on the response to submaximal and maximal exercise during assessments and/or training sessions.
  • Measure and monitor heart rate, electric activity of the heart (using ECG) and blood pressure at rest, during exercise and post-exercise.
  • Conduct group physical activity sessions with screened participants.
20
Q

What are the 7 exercise tests performed in CEP?

A
  • Aerobic exercise
  • Anaerobic exercise
  • Endurance exercise
  • Strength exercise
  • Flexibility exercise
  • Neuromuscular exercise
  • Functional performance
21
Q

Aerobic Exercise Test Terminology:
What is VO2max?
What is peak VO2?
(page 75 for example)

A
  • VO2max: maximum amount of oxygen utilized by the muscles during exercise.
    • Determined during a maximal exercise test. During a maximal exercise test the only limitation to further exercise performance should be oxygen delivery or uptake.
  • Peak VO2: highest rate of oxygen consumption measured during the exercise test, regardless of whether or not VO2 max is attained. Peak VO2 may be higher, lower, or equal to VO2 max.
22
Q

iClicker: In CEP settings, do we use VO2max or Peak VO2 more often?

A

B) Peak VO2

VO2max—>not possible because the client might have health condition & you want to avoid risks & injuries

23
Q

Aerobic Exercise Test Terminology:
what is VO2 MSS?

What is Ramp Protocols?

A
  • the Maximum Sustainable Speed (workload) that can be maintained during an exercise test

iClicker: For participant w/ chronic disease & disability, the usual range of MSS is 40 to 70% their maximal oxygen consumption

  • Ramp Protocol:Graded exercise tests that are individualized and provide continuous, frequent (every 10-20 seconds) increments of work rate so that VO2 increases linearly
    • iclicker: what are the 2 possible ways to increase work rate on the treadmill? —>Speed & incline
24
Q

What is an Anaerobic exercise test used for?
what is the difference b/w aerobic and anaerobic test?
Who are these tests appropriate for?

A
  • Used to determine maximum energy expenditure (high intensity work) in a short period of time (=time can vary from 30s to 60s and even 120s depending on test)
  • The exercise intensity generated during an anaerobic test will meet or exceed that of the aerobic test.
  • Appropriate for athletes who are preparing for competition.
25
Q
  • What is an Endurance Test used for?
  • Give an example of an endurance test widely used in CEP settings?
  • How can non-ambulatory participants perform endurance tests?
A
  • To Assess the ability to sustain Submaximal aerobic exercise for an extended time.
  • The 6 minute walk or 12 minute walk.
  • Can use the arm cycle ergometer
26
Q

What are Strength Tests used for?

How can they be performed?

A
  • used to determine the relative strength (or weakness) of a muscle or muscle group.
  • using sophisticated (Biodex Dynamometer) or basic equipment ( elastic bands, dumbbells, barbells, etc.)
27
Q

iClicker: Which of the following tests would you choose to assess muscle strength in hemiparetic participant (stroke)?

A

b) 10 RM test

28
Q
  • What are Flexibility Tests used for?
  • Can you name some motor control problems affecting ROM in participants with chronic disease and disability (especially neurological)?
A
  • Used to determine range of movement within a joint or a series of joints in a segment
  • Spasticity (spasm), contractors, paralysis
29
Q

What are Neuromuscular Tests used for?

A

To determine coordination and motor skill performance. ex: Stroke impairment assessment Set (i.e 1-knee mouth test; 2- foot tap coordination)

30
Q
  • What are Functional Performance tests designed to do?
  • What should Functional performance tests do?
  • Is it possible to assess physical functioning using a self-report questionnaire as a predictive model?
A
  • designed to determine the capacity of a person to perform ADL (activities of daily living)
  • Should mimic real tasks
    • i.e: timed-up and go, 30 s chair stand, Berg balance scale.
  • It is possible to assess physical functioning using a self-report questionnaire
    • i.e: Human activity profile & SF-12
31
Q

What are the pros & cons of functional performance tests?

A

pros: very close to real life situation
cons: may not be specific and detailed enough to pinpoint the problems (ex: timed up and go vs. Force Mat)
