Summarise the steps prior to any clinical examinations

A
  1. Introduce yourself and your role
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Obtain consent. Ensure consent is given before giving advice, touching, or carrying out any clinical examination
  4. Ask if there is any concerns
  5. Ensure equipment is clean
  6. Ensure woman is comfortable
  7. Ensure baby is safe, comfortable, and warm - disturb as little as possible
  8. Be aware of normal remit and factors that might influence findings
  9. Ensure environment is suitable for the examination eg. well-lit room

Summarise the steps post clinical examination

A
  1. Assist woman with her clothing
  2. Hand wash/alcohol rub
  3. If using swabs/tampons/instuments check all present with another health practitioner
  4. Dispose of equipment and rubbish appropriately
  5. Consider the whole person as although observations may be in normal range they may be misleading
  6. Explain findings, discuss and plan; discuss fully with mentor before discussing with mother
  7. Write up findings in notes including discussion and plan
  8. Report back to the midwife whether normal and abnormal
