What does a hemocult test for?
Blood in the stool
What can cause black/red stools?
Eating black licorice, blueberries, blood sausage, or taking iron pills, activated charcoal, or bismuth medicines like pepto-bismol can also cause black stools
Beets and foods with red coloring can make stools appear red
Describe small bowel obstruction
Risk factors: prior abdominal or pelvic surgery (adhesions), hernia, intestinal inflammation, neoplasm, prior irradiation
Sx: nausea, vomiting, cramping abdominal pain/distention, and obstipation (i.e. inability to pass flatus or stool)
What is Schatzki’s ring?
A ring of tissue that causes narrowing of the lower esophagus
What is Zenker’s diverticulum?
A pouch that has formed in the upper esophagus
What does elevated lipase and LFT mean?
Problem with pancreas and liver
