How are weight states defined in adults and children?
BMI in adults, and percentile charts in children
What is battery (in a legal sense)?
Is unlawful touching - Could apply if you act without a valid patient’s consent
What is the difference between consent and contract?
Consent can be withdrawn at any time which much be respected and isn’t binding, while contacts are binding and withdrawn can have consequences
How is capacity assessed?
1) Understand the treatment options and weight up potential benefits, risks, burdens and side effects of the options
and
2) Retain the information provided
and
3) Weigh up and communicate their decision
What are the requirements for valid consent?
1) Capacity (competence): ability to give or withdraw consent
2) Information: patient received enough information and understands the information
3) Voluntariness: not coerced
What are meant by dynamic function tests?
Dynamic function tests (DFT’s) involve either stimulating or suppressing a particular hormonal axis and observing the appropriate hormonal response.
In general, if a deficiency is suspected a stimulation test should be used whilst if excess is considered likely, a suppression test is required.
