Fracture
Splint above & below the fracture.
x6 weeks to heal. (can be split half cast/half splint)
Tendonitis
Immobilize for 24/7 x2 weeks to calm inflammation.
Followed by prn for aggravating activity.
Osteoarthritis (OA)
Rest at HS to calm inflammation.
Minimize joint movement during aggravating activity.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
Common deformity is ulnar deviation at MP’s which need support.
Tendon or Nerve Repairs
If repaired need to keep in shortened position during healing to prevent breakage at repair site.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
CT has the most space when the wrist is at 0 degrees.
Spasticity
Abduction reduces spasticity.
Soft objects increase spasticity while hard pressure reduces tone.
Burn
Goal is to prevent or correct scar contracture.
Early on- only immobilization tolerated (preserve ROM).
Focus on maintaining web space and lumbricale length (MO at 60 degrees)
Pediatrics
Developmental Age- avoid chocking hazards.
Compliance- less easily removed strapping.
Sensory Issues- Pts. are less tolerant of heat and will not tell you if it hurts.
