Climate Simulation Game Flashcards
Groupes (5)
- Developing Nations
- Developed Nations
- Climate Justice Hawks
- Clean Tech
- Conventional energy Supply
Developing Nations (Info+Goals 7)
Info: 40% of population/ 15% of economy/ 25% of all GHG
1. Subsidize renewable energy
2. Reduce emissions of methane, nitrous oxide and greenhouse gases (arise in developed)
3. Reduce deforestation
4. Consider afforestation
5. Consider taxing coal
6. Consider putting a price on co2 emissions
Developed Nations (Info+Goals 8)
Info: 17% of population/ 60% of economy/ 36% of GHG
1. Subsidize renewable energy
2. Reduce emissions of methane, nitrous oxide and
3. greenhouse gases (arise in developed)
4. Reduce deforestation
5. Consider afforestation
6. Decide whether to invest in research and development (R&D) for a new low-cost zero-carbon energy source.
7. Decide whether significant developments can be made in carbon removal technology.
8. Consider putting a price on CO, emissions.
Climate Justice Hawks (Info+Goals 5)
Info: environmental organizations and newer youth-led movements
1. Limit warming to well below 2°C and as close to 1.5°C as possible.
2. Get to 100% renewable energy as soon as possible through a high carbon price subsidies for renewables and taxes on fossil fuels.
3. Reduce deforestation.
4. Beware of efforts that threaten global food production and land rights.
5. Lobby the other groups for strong action.
Clean Tech (Info+Goals 6)
- Make fossil fuels pay their true costs through taxes and a high carbon price.
- Subsidize renewable energy (e.g., solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower, and storage).
- Promote energy efficiency and electrification of buildings and industry.
- Promote energy efficiency and electrification of transportation.
- Decide whether to invest in research and development (R&D) for a new low-cost zero-carbon energy source.
- Decide whether significant developments can be made in carbon removal technology.
Conventional energy Supply (Info+Goals 4)
Info: coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear, and electric utility industries
1. Oppose a high carbon price
2. Oppose taxes on fossil fuels
3. Promote new technologies including technological carbon removal, CCS, and biofuels.
4. Encourage actions that don’t directly affect your industry.
Climate Simulation Game: Represented Parties (Leader + Countries/Companies)
Developed countries
* Led by Justin Trudeau
* USA, Canada, EU, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand
Clean Tech
* Led by Elon Musk
* Wind, Solar and other renewable energy source etc.
Climate Justice Hawk
* Led by Greta Thunberg
* Leading environmental nonprofits, climate justice organizations, etc.

* Led by Sheikh Hasina (prime minister of Bangladesh)
* Southeast Asia, Most of the nations of Central and South America, Most african nations, etc.
Climate Simulation Game: Process
Per round each team can make one change, either add a new solution or reverse a previous action
Round 1: Team meeting
* Identify one action of the 18 levers in EN-roads that the teams wants to pursue
* Identify a delegate out of the team
* Prepare a 2 min speech
* After the speech the change will be implemented and results will be discussed together
Round 2: Team Meeeting & negotiations
* Discuss follow up actions as a team
* Negotiate with other groups and lobby them to change their position if necessary
Debrief
Status Quo/ Business-As-Usual Szenario(BAU)
+3,3°C by 2100
Effects:
* Arctic sea ice is gone in 2 out of every 3 summers
* 50% of insect species lose >50% of their habitat range
* Drought: 11 months longer (Increase in average drought length)
* Area burned by summer wildfires in Mediterranean doubles (Compared to today)
* Flood risk in Hanoi (Vietnam), Dubai
Graph Labelling: Atmospheric CO2 is higher than any time in that last 800,000 years
Y: Carbon dioxide concentration (parts per million)
X: Years before 1950
Low peak: 1950 level
High Peak: Current level (2023)
Baseline: For millennia, CO2 has never been above this line:
Graph Labelling: CO2 Emissions by Source
Top to bottom:
* Land-use change
* Others
* Gas
* Oil
* Coal
X: 1850-2018
Y: 0-40 Gt CO2
Goal Today
Limit global warming to less than 2ºC, and as close to
1.5ºC as possible, above pre-industrial levels.
