Climate Section 6 Flashcards
What is climate change and why is it different from global warming
Human’s impact on Earth’s climate. Global warming happens anyways regardless of humans.
How does climate change affect the sea level
It increases the sea level since warm water takes more space then cold water. Also, glaciers and ice sheets melt when it gets warm. This all increases the sea level, which means we lose more land.
How does climate change affect the pressure centers
When the temperature increases the poles and equator become similar in temperature. This makes global winds slower since differences in temperature cause global winds. So there will be longer storms and period of dry weather. Eventually land will dry up and not be able to hold water which increases chance of flooding.
How does climate change affect thermohaline circulation
Thermohaline circulation happens because of the sinking of cold water in the north and south atlantic. If the oceans water warm the sinking of cold dense water doesn’t happen. Thermohaline circulation brings warm water to Europe so if climate change continues Europe will actually become colder.
What is mitigation in climate change
Mitigation is reducing climate change (reducing sources of greenhouse gases like burning fossil fuels)
What is adaptation in climate change
Adaptation is adapting to life in a changing climate, like reducing our risks from the harmful effects of climate change (like sea-level rise)
