Climate Chp 14 Flashcards
What is climate
The average temperature, wind, humidity and precipitation occurring in a location over 30-35 years
What weather conditions are recorded to measure climate
Levels of rainfall
Hours of sunshine per day
Temperature
Wind speed
Factors that influence global climate
Latitude
Distance from the sea
Prevailing winds and air masses
Latitude (factor that influences Global climate)
Latitude means distance n/s from the equator. Areas close to the equator- warmer. Areas far from equator- cooler. Ireland is located mid-latitude so it has moderate temperatures.
Distance from the sea (factor that influences global climate)
The sea takes longer to heat up than land. Summer- heats up slowly. Winter- cools down slowly. Close to sea areas: cooler summers, milder winters. Eg: Western mayo
Prevailing winds and air masses
Winds from the south move warm air and winds from the north move cold air. Winds are named after the direction they come from. Ireland prevailing winds: south westerly
Northerly winds (prevailing wind)
They’re cold bc they come from higher latitudes.
Absorb moisture as they travel southwards over seas.
At winter- can bring snow
South westerly winds (prevailing winds)
Ireland prevailing winds, blows from across the Atlantic ocean.
Bring cool summers + Mild winters
Absorb moisture as they move over the ocean and often bring precipitation
Southerly winds/ tropical winds (prevailing winds)
Warm winds, coming from the latitudes close to the equator
May bring rain if they travel over bodies of water- loses its ability to hold moisture
Easterly winds- coming from Eastern Europe ( prevailing winds)
Warm in summer and cold in winter bc they travel across large areas of land.
Dry bc they mainly travel over land
Often called continental winds
Aspect (factor that influences local climates)
Aspect is the direction a slope faces om relation to the sun.
Areas in the northern hemisphere on south-facing slopes are warmer than those on north-facing slopes
Altitude (factors that influence local climates)
(Height above sea level)
The higher a place is above sea level, the colder it is
Temperature decrease by roughly 1°c for every 100m climbed
Hot climates (global climate)
Found close to the equator. Equatorial, savannaha and dessert
Temperate climates (global climates)
Found in the mid latitude (Ireland) cool temperate oceanic and warm temperate oceanic
Cold climates (global climate)
Found close to the poles. Boreal and tundra
